Description

"The Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis) is also called greater one-horned rhinoceros and Asian one-horned rhinoceros and belongs to the Rhinocerotidae family. Listed as a vulnerable species, the large mammal is primarily found in north-eastern India's Assam and in protected areas in the Terai of Nepal, where populations are confined to the riverine grasslands in the foothills of the Himalayas. The Indian rhinoceros once ranged throughout the entire stretch of the Indo-Gangetic Plain but excessive hunting reduced the natural habitat drastically. Today, about 3,000 rhinos live in the wild, 2,000 of which are found in India's Assam alone." - Wikipedia

I decided to get a little brave and tried a full body in Pastels. It was an interesting exercise, to say the least. Subject depicted is a juvenile.

Soft pastels and pastel pencils on 12x16 Canson Mi-Tientes paper.

The Color and Shading are close to flawless. The multiple colors and layers of the grass also adds to the total effect of the pic. Since art is perception and really has no rules, this next part can be ignored. The Rhino feels slightly shortened on the shoulder closest to the rest of the body. The media you choose does not lend itself to sharp detail, yet I think it would only bring the piece further if you could sharpen the lines of the face. The background is simplistic and I think it helps leave the viewers attention on the work, good choice. Over all a very lovely piece, keep up the good work
